 2018 Preview

Spanish Fort completed the 2017 season with a 11-2 record. Last year Spanish Fort captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 8-0 record. Spanish Fort lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Wetumpka team by a score of 69-41.

The high-scoring Spanish Fort offense ranked 10th in the AHSAA. They averaged 41.6 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Toros have gone 21-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Spanish Fort has gone a combined 99-14. Their 88.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 6A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 12 seasons, Spanish Fort has gone a combined 125-35. Their 78.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 6A and 7th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2007.

The Toros are led by head coach Ben Blackmon who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 36-5 over the past three seasons at Spanish Fort. Under his direction the Toros have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Blackmon. Coach Blackmon led Spanish Fort to a state championship in 2015.

Coach Blackmon's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 88-39 (69.3%). Over the course of his career, Coach Blackmon's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times and won three region championships.

The Spanish Fort Toros will play in Class 6A region one during the 2018 season.

The Toros enter the 2018 season riding a 9 game regular season winning streak. They have won 6 straight games on their home turf at The Hill.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Spanish Fort has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Toros should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Toros have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2007 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

The Toros open the 2018 season at home against region opponent Daphne on Friday, August 31 at The Hill. Last year the Daphne Trojans finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 6A region one. The Trojans lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Opelika by a score of 15-5.

Spanish Fort and Daphne have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Toros have a 10-2-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 2017 with Spanish Fort winning by a score of 8-7.

Spanish Fort returns 6A All-State  athlete Kris Abrams-Draine. He was named to the first team last season. The Toros also return  kicker Matthew Quinn. He was named to the second team.

College prospects include: D.J. James (5-10, 170) cornerback,
